PO Box 105 BREWARRINA NSW
The land in and around Brewarrina has played an integral role in Australia's history. The local fish traps are argued to be the oldest surviving human structure in the world, whilst in contrast 'Bre' was the location of the nations first aboriginal mission. The fish traps represented unity as aboriginal ancestors from all around gathered to meet and share natures harvest. The mission however has been torn to the ground for white mans role in the stolen generation and the unspeakable attrocities he carried out within those walls.
The impact of dispossession, colonisation and institutional racism remains evident in Brewarrina as it does in other aboriginal communities today. In pursuit of social justice the council aims to support the local aboriginal community as it seeks the right to a distinct status and culture, the right to self determination, and the right to land. Support us as we address issues created by the wrongs in our past.
