Walgett Shire is located in the Outback Region of NSW along the banks of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers. The Shire comprises several towns and villages; including Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri, Burren Junction, Carinda, Rowena, Pokataroo, Cumborah, Cryon and Come-by Chance, Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyards and covers an area of approximately 22,000sq/km. Each of the towns and villages have their own stories to tell and personalities to meet but the rural charm with country hospitality is found everywhere.

Council is seeking to appoint a General Manager who will drive transformational change and ensure that Council’s services meet the needs of the community. Reporting to the Mayor and Council, you will have strong leadership skills and a background in driving positive outcomes whilst fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, compliance and delivery.


To be successful in this position, you will have significant success in a senior leadership role, preferably in local government, with experience in:

  • Leading and managing change;
  • Developing and implementing strategic planning;
  • Building an organisational culture of empowerment and accountability; and
  • Delivering quality services to the community.

You will be a highly motivated senior executive who possesses excellent communication skills and the capacity to engage stakeholders at all levels in order to negotiate and influence positive outcomes for the Council and community.

This is a great role full of opportunities for the right person. Council is offering a 5-year performance-based contract and an attractive remuneration package. Relocation assistance will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
