28 charges for truck driver caught lacking with his logbook

A truck driver has been ordered to pay $42,000 in fines after multiple heavy vehicle offences in Walgett.

The 30-year-old driver was stopped on 2 February, after Walgett Highway Patrol detected the truck travelling at 64 km/h in the 50km/h zone.

After speaking to the driver, officers found his work diary/log book was non-compliant.

Police also noted that he recently was spoken to in relation to these breaches several weeks before, with a warning having already been issued to rectify his work diary.

Police seized the diary for analysis, and was later issued with a Court Attendance Notice for 28 charges, including 18 counts of not recording information as prescribed by National Regulations.

The driver was also charged with three counts of working more than the maximum standard time, two of which were critical breaches.

He was further issued a penalty notice for Class C Heavy Vehicle Exceed Speed Limit (>10 km/h), carrying a $546 fine and 3 demerit points.

On Tuesday 26 March 2024, the matter was before Walgett Local Court where the driver was convicted of all offences and was ordered to pay a monetary penalty totalling $42,000.
