The sun was shining and the golf club carpark was full to the brim with auto enthusiasts at this year's Coonamble Car Show on Saturday 16 September.

The all-day event drew a crowd of around 200 who came down to the Coonamble Golf Club for a day to admire the work the owners have put into their motor vehicles in preparation for the show.

Thirty-two cars were on show in 2023 with a further thirty-seven motorbikes to boot.

Coonamble Auto Club President, Steven Lane says he is happy with another successful year.

"It went really well," said Mr Lane.

"We had more entrants than we anticipated."

"It was a good number of spectators that came out as well."

As for the awards, all winning owners came away with $250 in cash, a $50 fuel card donated by Inland Petroleum, and a custom number plate trophy.

Award Winners

Fourteen categories made up the competition which was judged in whole by the spectators who attended the show on Saturday.

Best Holden was awarded to Kathy Colwell for her 1977 Holden AX9 Torana with Best Ford going to Darryl Brooks for his 1969 Ford XT Ute.

Best American car went to John Readford (Dubbo) for his 1924 (Durant) Rugby Tourer, and best motorbike to Darren Shields (Coonamble) for his 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster.

Best European car went to Col Pring for his 1975 Volkswagen Kombi, and best motorbike to Tony Mowbray (Coonamble) for his 1966 BSA Victor Enduro.

Best Japanese car went to Gary Atkins for his 2019 Nissan 370Z, and best motorbike to Noel White for his 2000 Honda Goldwing 1500.

Best Tractor was awarded to Hudson, Archer, and Chase Wiatkowski (Coonamble) for their 1940's Howard Kelpie.

In the unfinished projects category, club member Paul Johnson took top gong for his 1935 Chevrolet Standard.

The best in the other/mixed category was awarded to Colin Grant for his 1961 Valiant S.

In the more novelty awards section, Col Print was awarded the furthest travelled award after trekking 300 kilometres to Coonamble from in Pallamallawa, east of Moree.

Gerry's Pick (selected by family members of the late Gerry Lane) went to Tony Mowbray for his 1966 BSA Victor Enduro Motorbike.

Grand Champion

The big award, Coonamble Grand Champion was awarded to Kathy Colwell for her 1977 Holden AX9 Torana.

The 100% original Torana was originally purchased by Kathy back in 1977.

"Three or four years ago we decided to do something with it," said Mrs Colwell.

"We started with the seats and carpet, the body needed sandblasting and a repaint. The paintjob is the original Torana one."

"It’s all original wheels and we haven't touched the motor either."

For winning Grand Champion, Kathy received $350 dollars in cash, a $50 fuel card donated by Inland Petroleum, and a number plate trophy.

Three lucky spectators came away with $100 each in the spectator draw, with Lesley Mooy, Kim Beazley, and Tony Wiatkoswki all winning the draw.
