Baradine to step back in time1972 Baradine Central School Captains Loren Davies and Graham Wilton place the time capsule into the ground.

When a time capsule buried by Form 3 (Year 9) students in the Baradine Lions Park in 1972 is dug up it is expected to reveal a ‘snapshot’ of what Baradine was like at that time.

Preparations are underway for a special ceremony to open the capsule and put the contents on display to the general public. The concrete sealed container contains town and school memorabilia and photographs with instructions for it to be opened in 2022.

Now the search is on to contact former school students and staff members who were at the original event so that they can be invited to the time capsule opening ceremony.

Time capsule committee member and former Form 3 student, Becky Featherbe remembers the capsule burying.

“The contents were placed in a metal box and welded shut by our metalwork teacher,” Becky recalls.

“Local builder, Cliff Matthews prepared the hole with 18 inches of concrete into which the time capsule was pushed and covered with another foot of concrete. Later another layer of concrete was added on top to hold the commemorative plaque, so it will be quite a challenge to retrieve it!

“Anne Harris was master of ceremonies for the event and school captains, Loren Davies and Graham Wilton placed the capsule into the ground."

If you're part of the Class of 1972 then it is time to travel home to Baradine.

“The idea came from English teacher, Vicki French as a class project. Each student was given a subject to research, which was typed up by class member Jan Rose. This was, of course, long before computers so when a mistake was made it stayed. This resulted in my maiden name being incorrectly spelt; Kitchen instead of Hitchen, but I forgave her!

“We took photos of the town to be placed in the capsule but I cannot recall what else went in.”

The capsule will be opened following a community barbeque lunch at the school on Thursday, 15 September and the current year 9/10 history class will bury a new time capsule on the same day.

Baradine Central School is keen to hear from former 3rd form students and staff from 1972. They should contact Linda Buckley on 02 68431805.
