Brewarrina artist Belinda Boney has recently been commissioned to do an Indigenous design for the NSW Country Rugby Union guernseys.

The Western Plains Junior Rugby Union teams have been wearing their new guernsey recently in their first competition in Coffs Harbour. Belinda’s daughter Janalee Conroy is the NSW Rugby Development Officer and had a big hand in getting her mother to design the guernseys.

This is just her most recent art project, but Belinda has done so much more.

Her art is found on the NRMA car charging station that is situated at the front of the Brewarrina Information Centre and there will be an official opening as soon as the Minister for Transport is available to travel to Brewarrina.

Belinda also designed the image seen on the NSW Rural Fire Service truck.

“When I didn’t want to work at school I would draw or sketch and when at home I would go out and sit under the big willow tree in our front yard," Belinda said.

"As a young child I wasn’t allowed to leave my yard or Barwon Four, so all I had was my drawing. I learnt a lot off my older brothers as they were very good artist as well.”

Belinda is a proud Murrawarri/Weilwan woman who grew up in Brewarrina on Barwon Four.

She is a very community-oriented person and her new role within the Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Lands Council as the Women’s Business program Co-ordinator fits her perfectly.

During the week you will find Belinda out and about in her community or doing programs with the youth or women.
