Members of the Bourke Men's Shed were visited by Member for Parkes Mark Coulton on Friday 4 June to learn more about how they would benefit from almost $3,000 in federal government funding.
The Bourke Men's Shed is one of 10 in the Parkes electorate - which also included Boggabri, Cobar, Dunedoo, Gunnedah, Warialda, Mendooran, Menindee, Moree and Walgett - that will get a share of more than $29,000 from the latest round of the government's National Shed Development Programme.
Bourke Men's Shed President Robert Stutsel said they initially applied for the grant through the Australian Men's Shed Association so they could purchase three air coolers at the shed.
"In the summer where we normally have our meals it can get very hot - when it's 40 degrees outside, it's probably 50 degrees inside," Mr Stutsel said.
"Ironically, we applied for the grant in January when it was hot as anything and it's only come through now that it’s cold.
"That being said, we can always put more clothes on and next summer, it will make a huge difference."
Member for Parkes Mark Coulton dropped in to the Bourke Men's Shed during a visit to the town last Friday and said it was a pleasure to find out how the group's $2,990 share in the grant money would benefit them.
"I’ve always been a proud supporter of Men’s Sheds because they play a vital role in preventing social isolation and mental ill health," Mr Coulton said.
"They offer thousands of men of all ages a safe and friendly environment where they can work on meaningful projects while building strong social connections.
"The federal government will continue to support Men’s Sheds as part of our comprehensive approach to improving the health of Australian men and boys."
According to Mr Coulton, the grants from the National Shed Development Programme were also being used to purchase tools and equipment and fund shed developments and health and wellbeing events at other shed locations.
