A FULL day of fun celebrating national pride is in store for the Bourke community this Australia Day complete with activities for Australians of all ages to enjoy.

The event will be held at the Bourke War Memorial Swimming Pool starting with a free cooked breakfast provided by the local rotary club from 8am before the official ceremony kicks off at 9am.

The ceremony will follow standard procedure with a welcome to country, prayer, address from the council followed by the address from the local Australia Day ambassador.

Bourke Shire Council Economic Development Manager Melanie Milgate said this year's ambassador for the Bourke shire was endurance swimmer James Pittar who has been attending Australia Day ceremonies for more than two decades.

"James has been legally blind since the age of 21 - to think about what you go through being a long distance swimmer and also blind, I can't wait to hear his story, especially in these parts which has a great swimming history," Ms Milgate said.

"He actually swam the English Channel back in the 90s and was included in the 2019 Guinness Book of World Records.

"James is also bringing out his lovely wife and teenage daughter - council is so happy to have a lovely ambassador and find out his story while showcasing Bourke and all its beauty to his family."

Mr Pittar also has an affiliation with the Fred Hollows Foundation. Mr Hollows is, coincidentally, buried in Bourke and Ms Milgate said they would likely make a point to go and pay their respects at some point in the day.

After Mr Pittar's address there will be a citizenship ceremony - with two new Bourke residents officially joining the community - before the presentation of the Australia Day awards.

Ms Milgate said categories this year are the Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year, Young Sportsperson, Sportsperson, Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of the Year each with a range of nominees.

"We're always amazed we continue to find such worthy recipients of the awards and we hope any winners will walk away feeling proud of their contributions to the Bourke shire," she said.

Following the presentations, the community will launch straight into a free pool party at the venue with activities like thong throwing, a 'dash for cash' swimming competition, a lamington eating competition, watermelon eating competition and a coin toss into the pool.

"There's also going to be half a pool full of blow-up pool toys so the younger kids can go absolutely mad," Ms Milgate said with a chuckle.

"As for entertainment, we have family band coming up from Coonamble to play all morning from 8am - they will actually be singing the national anthem for us which I think is fantastic."

According to Ms Milgate, because the event takes place outdoors, all normal outdoor COVID restrictions will be enforced with plenty of hand sanitiser and masks on hand for people to use at their discretion.

"We're hoping to see as many of our community members as possible come along to reflect, respect and celebrate," she said.
