Bourke shire gets better connectedFederal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton (right) recently met with Bourke Shire Council Mayor Barry Hollman to announce that Field Solutions Group was successful in receiving funding to deploy a fixed wireless network in the shire.

Bourke Shire Council has welcomed an allocation of federal government funding to improve local mobile and internet connectivity.

Bourke is one of more than 50 projects that have been funded under the federal government's Regional Connectivity Program (RCP).

Minister for Regional Communications Mark Coulton visited the town last week to announce the RCP funding being allocated through the Field Solutions Group, which will head up the local project.

"Field Solutions Group has received $589,712 in funding to extend high-speed broadband connectivity into areas in the Bourke region with limited existing coverage, enabling the uptake of new agricultural and business technologies," Minister Coulton said.

"This project will help keep our businesses connected, allow our families to stay in touch and provide people in Bourke with greater access to telehealth and education services.

"I’m thrilled that residents and businesses in Bourke will enjoy the benefits and opportunities that improved digital connectivity brings."

The news has been well received by Bourke Shire Council, who negotiated the project with Field Solutions Group and supported its application for the grant last year.

Council's General Manager Mark Riley said in the past, connectivity in the shire in the past could be best described as "patchy".

"Once you get in the extremities of the township, it gets quite bad, particularly with Wi-Fi which is hard on businesses in those areas," Mr Riley said.

According to Mr Riley, Bourke Shire Council will be providing in-kind support for the project in the form of facilities for the new installation.

He said he was unsure how far the new Wi-Fi coverage will spread, though suspected the north Bourke area, would particularly benefit from improved connection.

"This (project) is certainly about trying to link in with our local agricultural companies to get them better exposure," he said.

"Business operations require connectivity - you want to get that information fast and reliably, so I think it's a great step forward for the shire."

According to Minister Coulton, the delivery of successful projects under the RCP will begin shortly, with most projects to be completed by June 2022.

He said a further $105.8 million in funding has been made available for a second round of the program, with applications to open later this year.
