Fire crews from the Hunter and Tamworth regions are due to arrive in the Walgett area tomorrow as fires continue at the Narran Lake Nature Reserve.

Over 14,000 hectares of land have been burned in separate fire events in the reserve and surrounding areas, after lightning sparked several fires last Thursday 9 November.

“We sent crews out there but due to warm, windy days that we've had since Sunday…and the fuel out there is quite high, so the fires are quite hard to control,” said RFS North West District Manager David Nicholson.

Since the flames started, the RFS has engaged all crews in the Walgett Shire Council and National Parks crews from across the state, as well as planes from Sydney and Dubbo deployed to drop retardant to the west of the village to slow the easterly spread of the fire.

With little reprieve in sight, firefighters have been called in from Hunter and North West zones.

“They will be arriving tomorrow to give our local volunteers a rest because they’ve been going 24/7 since Thursday,” Mr Nicholson said.

“There is some potential rain predicted further south, but unfortunately that’s not enough, if any at all around where the fires are. Then it will go back into warm, hot weather again.”

According to the latest forecast, Westerly winds are expected to strengthen tomorrow, potentially pushing the fire in an easterly direction towards Glengarry and Grawin Opal Fields.

A potential for more lightning storms could also mean more fires.

“The people of Glengarry and Grawin Opal Fields should remain vigilant about what the fire is doing.”

“If they see any fires that are unattended by a firetruck to ring Triple Zero immediately,” Mr Nicholson said.

Locals are also urged to follow advice from firefighters, the RFS Website, Fires Near Me, or your local broadcaster.

Further afield, fire permits from Bogan, Coonamble, Walgett and Warren shires will be suspended till 12am Friday morning, due to fire weather conditions.

After authorities alerted residents of potential fires following storms over the weekend, fires have also burned areas outside of Cobar, Condobolin and Bourke.
