COVID-19 cases in the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) have increased again slightly in the past 24 hours and one new patient was admitted to hospital.
Up to 8pm last night, five new cases of COVID-19 were identified in the WNSWLHD, two of which were in the Walgett LGA.
The remainder were in Wellington (two) and Dubbo (one). This brings the total number of cases in the region to 1562.
Some of these cases had been alluded to by WNSWLHD Chief Executive Scott McLachlan yesterday having been identified overnight between Monday and Tuesday 18-19 October.
It is not currently known if any further cases were identified overnight between 19 October and today (Wednesday 20 October).
He said this indicated there was still a presence of COVID in the WNSWLHD which would continue to spread as people from other regional areas - and urban and overseas travellers from 1 November - were able to travel in the district.
Having zero patients in hospital was also short-lived, with one person admitted yesterday. They are not in intensive care at this stage however.
In addition, eight patients were discharged from the district's COVID Care in the Community Program. According to yesterday's update, more than 130 people were still being cared for in this program across the region.
No new venues of concern or sewage detections in areas without identified COVID cases were added in the past 24 hours.
Testing-wise, there were 2253 tests across the WNSWLHD. Health officials like Mr McLachlan continue to reiterate the importance of testing on a regular basis and urge residents to consider taking advantage of surveillance testing opportunities available in the region.
Information about testing, including times and locations for pop-up testing clinics, is available here.
Mr McLachlan has also praised the WNSWLHD for their high vaccination rates - something he said will serve as a massive protection from contracting, transmitting and getting really ill from COVID.
According to vaccination data released from the federal government on Sunday 17 October, many LGAs in the WNSWLHD have more than 90 per cent of their populations (aged 16 and over) with their first dose.
Second doses are also in the high 80s for many LGAs, including Warren, with 86.7 per cent, and Gilgandra, with 88 per cent.
The Coonamble LGA continues to be a high achiever with 96.6 per cent of the eligible population having had their first dose and 88.5 per cent had their second.
The latest vaccination rates on other northern LGAs like Bourke, Brewarrina, Bogan and Cobar are still being calculated, but the latter has been previously highlighted as an area with a concerningly lower rate than others.
Vaccination opportunities for first and second doses will be available in both Bourke and Cobar, among others, throughout the remainder of this week. Other information about local vaccination can be found here.
