Nearly 1,000 Essential Energy customers in Brewarrina were left without power this morning after a cat came in contact with the high-voltage electricity network inside the zone around 5am.

The incident caused two fuses to fail which led the electricity network protection equipment to operate automatically after detecting a fault.

In total, 956 customers energy accounts were involved, affecting many organisations and citizens in the area.

The Brewarrina Central School shared on Facebook that they would only have limited services due to the unplanned outage.

The Brewarrina Shire Council was also temporarily closed until the power could be restored.

Power was partially restored to the area around 10:20am.

The Brewarrina Shire Council announced on Facebook they will be resuming service by 11am.
