Newly elected Federal Member for Parkes, Jamie Chaffey, will deliver his maiden speech in the House of Representatives at 4.30pm today (Wednesday 30 July).
The milestone follows his official swearing-in to the 48th Parliament earlier this month and comes after a busy start representing one of Australia’s largest and most diverse electorates.
Mr Chaffey described his election win in May as an incredible privilege and said he would not be taking the role for granted.
He said he is determined to fight for the people of Parkes and ensure the region receives the attention and investment it deserves.
During his campaign, Mr Chaffey travelled thousands of kilometres, meeting with communities across the vast Parkes electorate that stretches from Broken Hill to Moree.
“As I travelled 36,000 kilometres during the election campaign, I learned more about the challenges people face," he said.
"People on the land achieve great things despite the tyranny of distance, but they deserve the same levels of education, of healthcare, and of safety."
Reflecting on the scale of the electorate, which covers more than 400,000 square kilometres, Mr Chaffey emphasised the importance of ensuring that regional voices are heard in Parliament.
Jamie Chaffey won the Parkes seat with 60 oer cent of the vote, succeeding Mark Coulton amidst an 8.03 per cent swing against Nationals.
He has also voiced his commitment to continued investment in the Parkes electorate, particularly in infrastructure projects like Inland Rail, and in supporting local small and medium businesses.
“Our people need and deserve to be supported, so they can continue to stay and thrive in regional, rural and remote areas.”
Since being elected, Mr Chaffey has remained focused on the needs of his constituents, saying he is now looking forward to getting to work to make the region even better.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of the Parkes electorate,” he said.
“I am now looking forward to getting to work to fight for every single person ... to make our area an even better place to live.”
Mr Chaffey will next be seen in the Western Plains at the Three Rivers Machinery Nyngan Ag Expo.
"It’s the season for agricultural field days and I’m looking forward to attending the Nyngan Ag Expo next Saturday, August 2nd," he said.
"I’ll be there with my state colleague Scott Barrett MLC and we invite you to join us for lunch at the NSW Nationals site G17 from 11.30am to 1pm.
With his maiden speech now scheduled, constituents across the Parkes electorate will be watching closely as Mr Chaffey outlines his vision and priorities in federal Parliament.
The speech will be live-streamed at 4.20pm today. You can watch it here.
It will also be available for later viewing via ParlView.
