RESIDENTS with smartphones and Service NSW accounts will now have a new way of proving they are fully-vaccinated being able to show the green tick at the same time as they check-in to businesses.
Residents across NSW can now add the COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate into their Service NSW app, with the integrated technology made available from Friday 15 October.
State Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said NSW was the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out a statewide integrated QR code solution to display vaccination status and would make life easier for businesses and customers alike.
“When someone visits a venue, (customers will) be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time," Mr Dominello said.
“While integrating the COVID-19 digital certificate on to the Service NSW app will be optional, it will be the by far the easiest and quickest way to prove you’re fully vaccinated.”
As the vaccine data sits in the Federal Australian Immunisation Register to integrate the COVID-19 digital certificate into the Service NSW app there are a number of steps involved.
You will need to:
There were already three other ways to demonstrate the COVID-19 vaccine certificate. Customers can use the Express Plus Medicare app or the digital wallet on their phone.
Customers without a smartphone can also print a vaccination certificate from their Medicare account or contact Services Australia for a paper certificate in order to prove their vaccination status.
John Green, Director of Liquor and Policing at the Australian Hotels Association NSW, said venue operators were reporting the vaccination status combined with the QR check-in made it easier to check and validate.
“The convenience of having a customer’s vaccination status presented alongside their check-in will allow for a seamless entry and take pressure off venue staff,” Mr Green said.
“It certainly makes the process quicker.”
According to the current COVID-19 rules, if you are required to be fully-vaccinated to enter a premises, you may be asked to produce your vaccination evidence by the occupier.
While it is not mandatory to do so, the occupier may refuse entry to you if you do not produce your vaccination evidence.
Owner of Global Village Cafe in Coonamble, Ahmad Karanouh says he is reluctant to ask for proof of vaccination.
Coonamble coffee shop owner Ahmad Karanouh said he does not ask his customers to produce evidence upon entry.
"I always ask my customers if they have signed in but feel I'm not in a position to ask if they are vaccinated - as a shop owner, I don't feel it's my place to police it," Mr Karanouh said.
At the same time, Mr Karanouh said it was good to have a seamless ability to show their vaccination status if they choose.
"I do think it would make life easier for a lot of people, including shop owners - we've already seen people coming in with their piece of paper or even have it on the front of their phone so they can find it easily," he said.
"The right people are showing us without us even having to ask - that's what we need more of to make our jobs easier."
The Service NSW app will include a number of security measures to help compliance officers and businesses with checking and validating a customer’s vaccination status, including a NSW Waratah logo hologram and rotating QR codes, similar to the Digital Driver Licence.
