The quick response of the grocery store owner and local fire crews has saved the store from fire.
On Thursday 30 March local fire crews were called to the Friendly Grocer in Brewarrina.
“We received a call out at 7:10am to an electrical fire at the Friendly Grocer," said Deputy Captain of the FRNSW, Sam Willoughby.
"The fire was quickly put out without any damage to the structure of the building, and the inside with mostly smoke and water damage.”
The fire is believed to have started at the back of the store as a result of faulty wiring situated behind the fruit and vegetable area.
Mr Willoughby says that the quick thinking of the store owner in using a fire extinguisher to contain the initial outbreak prevented a major fire.
Although there was some internal damage, FRNSW say the fire in Brewarrina's grocery store last week could have been much worse.
Mr Rishi Palta is the new owner of the store.
“I tried to stop the fire, and it would start to go out but would flare back up," Mr Palta said. "Once the flames got too hot, I had to run out of the building.”
“If we hadn’t used the extinguisher, we would have lost the whole shop," he said.
Despite some damage from the fire plus smoke and water, Mr Palta said the closure would be brief.
“The store will be operating in the next few days," he said.
"We have electricians in now checking the wires and as soon as the power is back on we will start to clean and reopen. The damaged area will be blocked off until it can be rebuilt.”
