Cluster of cases at Walgett abattoir and sewage traces in Lightning RidgeWalgett residents are again on alert as a cluster of cases emerges.

A covid outbreak at an abattoir outside Walgett has sparked calls for the community to renew their efforts to get tested and vaccinated.

Western NSW Local Health District CEO Scott McLachlan said that the source of the Walgett infections was clear and that the cluster of cases are closely connected.

"They are all workers at an abattoir outside Walgett," he said.

"It was not a locally acquired case that kicked off this outbreak, it was a case from western Sydney."

"All the workers live on site at the abattoir but there are locations of concern in Walgett as some of these workers have been in the community at this time."

Mr McLachlan said that all the cases are in isolation and that there is good support in place around the abattoir but urged people in Walgett to take up the "many vaccination opportunities" at local GPs, Ochre Clinic and Aboriginal Medical Service and to "please come forward and get tested."

A drive-through testing clinic is operating at Walgett Swimming Pool TODAY & TOMORROW from 9.30am to 4pm. No bookings are needed and it may be extended.

Mr McLachlan has visited Walgett and Brewarrina in the past couple of days and praised the approach of both communities, along with their councils, police, Aboriginal Health Services and others, to mount a response to the virus in their towns.

"Everyone has come together to protect their community," Mr McLachlan said. "It was very reassuring and very impressive."

The Walgett and Brewarrina Shires, along with Bourke, Narromine, Nyngan and Gilgandra, remain in lockdown and residents are urged to check the updated list of venues of concern here at Alerts & Announcements.

Lightning Ridge is now on alert with a positive sewage test.

"I call on everyone in Lightning Ridge to stay vigilant, come forward and get tested," Mr McLachlan said.

While Brewarrina remains in lockdown for the moment, with only two active cases currently nearing the end of their 14 day isolation period, there is some hope that the Brewarrina shire might soon emerge from tight lockdown.

Mr McLachlan attributed Brewarrina's success to the partnership approach which has had a support model in place for every household.

The town's high vaccination rate may also help, with first doses approaching 90% of the community and those fully vaccinated hovering around 40%.

Royal Flying Doctor Service

*Dr Randall Greenberg outlined the RFDS commitment to the covid effort at a press conference at midday today.

Dr Randall Greenberg says that the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has been doing vaccinations across western NSW since before the current outbreak began but has "flexed up" their service.

"We now have an extra shift working out of Dubbo and helping the Far West as well," Dr Greenberg said.

"We've been to about fifteen different towns doing vaccinations and have done about 10,000 vaccinations across NSW."

With most of their clinics popping up in smaller, remote communities, Dr Greenberg said the RFDS "can vaccinate a large proportion" of each community in a very short time.

In the past few days Dr Greenberg has been working in the intensive care unit at Dubbo Base Hospital which he said has reinforced the urgent need for vaccinations.

"I've seen some of the sickest people I've seen in my long career," Dr Greenberg said.

"Covid really does ravage the body when it gets going. Not in everybody, but especially for those who are unvaccinated."
