New Year's Eve was mainly a quiet affair in Cobar this year as people recovered from what was a hectic back end to 2022.
The first day of 2023 started off early at around 8am with the Cobar Parkrun and, despite a dip in popularity in recent years, with a beautiful morning at the Newey Reservoir on 31 December 2022 organisers saw an increase in numbers at their event.
"We had 17 participants which included 2 visitors. We're hoping to bring Park Run to the forefront of people's mind again. Looking at relaunching sometime in February to hopefully remind people that this great event still exists and to capture any new people that may have settled in town," Trudy Rogers, Cobar Parkrun volunteer, told the Western Plains App.
And while not everyone kicked off their new year so energetically, we thought we'd check in to see how they went the night before...
The Lotto prize on New Year's Eve was fairly large at $40 million, however the Cobar Newsagency told the Western Plains App that they had "a pretty usual day even for a big lotto".
Unfortunately no local winners were announced.
To find out what really happened in Cobar to round out 2022, the Western Plains App ran a quick poll of locals via social media, to find out first-hand how they spent New Year's Eve.

There were 163 votes overall and the top 5 answers were:
1) The number one response was that locals spent the night 'At home - with family and friends' with 49 votes or 31%;
2) the next most popular choice was also 'At home – like any other night' with 43 votes or 26%;
3) Getting together with friends or family at Cobar Bowling Golf & Club or 'Golfie' was the next choice with 35 votes or 21%;
4) Coming in fourth was hanging out 'At someone's house' with 17 votes or 10%; and
5) Finally, 5% of Cobarians "Worked" or chose "Other" activities.
With 57% of votes saying they were 'At home with family and friends' or 'At home – like any other night', Cobar had a quiet New Years' Eve.
The third most popular choice, the 'Golfie' had a very successful day and evening, on New Year's Eve, with entertainment for all the family including fairy floss, a barbeque by the Rotary Club, and face painting by Bekstar.

There were five local musicians on stage throughout the day: Kahlia Martin, Jade Martin & DJ (now based in Dubbo), Shane Josephson, and the Ballz n All band to end the night.
"We like to support local musicians and give them a chance to play", Jason Howell, the General Manager of the 'Golfie' told the Western Plains App.
"We like to keep the money in Cobar, if at all possible. The night was about giving back to the community, as we are a community club, it is very important to us."
