A woman has been arrested by police over the weekend during a regional operation investigating illegal hunting and rural crime offences in and around Nyngan and Cobar.
Operation Koorana was a joint operation between officers from the Rural Crime Prevention Team and Central North Police District conducted between Friday 29 July and Sunday 31 July.
State Rural Crime Coordinator Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside said the operation highlighted the commitment of multiple levels of policing working together as one to tackle rural crime.
“Rural crimes are often not committed in isolation and at times involve a variety of crimes, including traffic and drug offences,” Det Ch Insp Whiteside said.
“Specialist rural crime officers are greatly assisted by local police with their knowledge and skills to investigate these crimes and assist land owners."
During the operation, police conducted more than 50 random breath tests, conducted 10 vehicle searches and 14 livestock carrier inspections.
In total, 11 charges were laid and an additional eight Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) were issued for a range of traffic-related offences.
One incident of note included an arrest in the Cobar LGA which occurred on Saturday 30 July.
At about 4.50pm officers were patrolling the Cobar township, when they attempted to stop a sedan at the intersection of the Barrier Highway and Morrison Street.
The sedan failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated. A short time later it came to a stop on a dirt road off Bloxham Street.
The driver, a 29-year-old woman, was then arrested and taken to Cobar Police Station, where she underwent a drug analysis returning a positive result.
The secondary testing was sent for further analysis. She was charged with Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, Use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, Use uninsured motor vehicle, Use vehicle in contravention of minor defect notice and drive with >7 yrs <16 yrs old not restrained as prescribed.
The woman was issued a future court attendance notice to appear at Cobar Local Court on Tuesday 23 August.
Police will continue to run similar operations in an attempt to detect illegal hunting and rural crime offences throughout the state.
