The Come-By-Chance race committee has made the disappointing decision to postpone this weekend’s picnic race meeting, following a cruel trail of country race meeting cancellations that have come head to head with continuous rain. With a postponement date in mind, however, hope is still alive for the event.
Race committee honorary secretary Cathie Colless could recite a long list of reasons this weekend’s race meeting couldn’t go ahead.
“It was recent rain, water on the track, a forecast to rain, inaccessible roads and impending floodwaters,” Mrs Colless said.
Much like Enngonia, Louth and Brewarrina, ongoing rain has simply become too much for the event to go ahead but with harvest right around the corner, the committee is eagerly working towards a new date that could save the season.
“We’re negotiating with Racing NSW…everything has to go in our favour if we’re looking at running it after harvest. Harvest has to go in our favour but you have to have hope don’t you,” Mrs Colless said.
After two years of Covid-induced cancellations, the committee doesn’t want to go down without fighting.
“It’s never really been an option. This year, we just want to try really hard, all the work has been done. Everything’s in place and we just want to give it a go,” Mrs Colless said.
“When anything is postponed once, sometimes there’s a lull and it’s hard to regenerate that enthusiasm. So after two years of Covid it’s great to see that people really are enthusiastic and they want to keep coming,” she said.
The committee is working towards setting a new date in December, but will be subject to approvals from Racing NSW.
