Condobolin cut off

Condobolin cut offThe township of Condobolin is becoming increasingly isolated as more water is released from Wyangala Dam.

Following wild weather and up to 90mm of rain in some places, Condobolin is now isolated with the most recent road closure being the Henry Parkes Way (Condobolin to Parkes) that is now closed to all light vehicles. 4WD and trucks are exempt at this stage.

The road closures today come in advance of severe flooding expected later in the week as Wyangla Dam increases it's flow from 110,000 Megalitres per day to 125,000 Megalitres per day - a number that is distressing to already saturated locals.

Jeff Bennett lives along the Lachlan River west of Condobolin, but has been forced to evacuate to town for the past few weeks.

"We evacuated about a month ago but we sent a drone up last weekend to see how everything was," he said.

"Everything was ok at that time but we're in a bit of a different position to most because we're situated on a pretty wide floodplain, so we don't get the same river level rises as anyone else."

Just across the river, Mr Bennett's neighbors Jock and Trini Coupland have been busily trying to block the water off.

"The water is creeping into our garden at the moment but it's still got a long way to go before we're in any real danger," said Trini.

"We've been busy building a levee bank but with the amount of water that they're talking about it is a bit of a worry," she said.

The Bureau of Meterology has today released a statement that predicts the Lachlan River at Condobolin Bridge may reach 7.40 metres around 10-12 November with major flooding, similar to the June 1952 flood.

""We were cut off for nearly a week and they've been talking about that happening again," said Catherine Cooper, who was finally able to make it to town today for work.

Mrs Cooper's property is located about 70 kilometres South of Condobolin and her access to town is restricted by the road closure at Murie Creek Crossing, though yesterday it was opened for essential local travel only.

"Personally I'm worried because the water's got to go somewhere and it's likely that it will just make what's already here deeper, wider and wetter for longer," she said.

Although Mrs Cooper has personal concerns about the flooding, including her family's ability to pull off any kind of harvest this year, her role within the Lachlan Shire's Home and Community Care Service (HACC) means there are bigger things on her mind.

"A lot of medical specialists travel out to Orange or Parkes, or in some cases they even come to Condo, but they've had to cancel services for our seniors and elderly clients here at HACC," she said.

"Some of these clients have been booked in for some quite serious operations and follow up appointments but they haven’t been able to see anyone which is quite debilitating."

"Our Meals on Wheels team have also been affected as we can't get those frozen meals delivered from Dubbo or Narrandera which means we're not being able to provide nutritious meals to those elderly people who need them," said Mrs Cooper.

"It's really quite sad."

The Condobolin SES are trying hard to get the message across.

While the town's most vulnerable residents are bearing the brunt of the unfortunate situation, the Lachlan SES have warned that anyone who uses the roads when they shouldn't will also feel the impact.

If not from the floodwater itself, than from the heavy fine that awaits them.

"The police have asked people if they witness someone moving or driving round a road closed sign to take a photo and forward the photo with their license plate number to the police and they will prosecute them," said Condobolin's SES Unit Commander, Susan Bennett.

"It is so disappointing to see stupid people ignoring the road closed signs and ruining the roads for everyone else," she said.

In addition to staying off the roads, the SES are asking locals to prepare to evacuate or isolate.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas around Condobolin may be impacted by flooding:

  • Low lying areas may be impacted by inundation
  • The Booberoi Road (Euabalong – Condobolin) can be impacted by water.
  • Forbes-Condobolin Road may be impacted in multiple locations.
  • Rural land inundation along North Forbes Road, Lachlan Valley and Kiacatoo Road.
  • Lachlan Valley Way between Euabalong and Lake Cargelligo can be impacted by water.
  • Condobolin - Diggers Avenue may see water through causeway
  • Condobolin - The Gipps way causeway may flood where access to West Wyalong will be cut.
  • The older part of Riverview Caravan Park may become isolated
  • Dwelling adjacent to Lachlan River on Diggers Avenue starts to flood
  • Lachlan Street between William Street and Denison Street can be impacted by water
  • Rural properties along North Forbes Road and Grassmere Road may become isolated
  • Further rural properties isolations along Wiatoah Lane, Kiacatoo Road, North Forbes Road and Lachlan Valley Way to the east and west of Condobolin may occur
