THE Coonamble Team Penning Association held an egg-cellent and record- breaking team penning event over the Easter long weekend on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 April 2023.

The Coonamble Team Penning Association noted a record number of nominations and runs, with 102 participants competing each day- 203 runs on Saturday and 198 runs on Sunday.

Keen competitors warmed up their team penning skills by walking cattle from Kerrianne and Scott Edwards' farm, located 10km out of Old Gulargambone Rd to the Coonamble Showground arena on Friday 7 April.

Tessa Pennell, Secretary of the Coonamble Team Penning Association said the cattle walk is a great opportunity for locals to prepare their horses for the weekend.

"A lot of local kids put their hands up to walk the cattle from 10km out of town, across the river and into the Coonamble showground," Mrs Pennell said.

"The kids love to be involved in all aspects of the weekend, and it is a great opportunity for the kids to get back on their horses and give them a run before a big weekend of team penning.

102 competitors aged 6 to 75 travelled across the Western Plains area to take part in the team penning competition including participants from Cobar, Dubbo, Geurie, West Wyalong, Trangie, Mendooran, Tooraweenah, Baradine, Coonabarabran and Coonamble.

Mrs Pennell said she was overjoyed with the record- breaking number of nominations this year.

"The whole weekend ran very smoothly, with no injuries. Many junior participants said they had a great weekend catching up and making new friends.

"It was great to see so many local kids give team penning a crack this year! It is always nice to see junior competitors taking part in the team penning events. The juniors always ride so well and have the biggest smiles on their faces. It is always lovely to see junior competitors enjoying themselves and learning so many news skills that they will keep for life," she said.
