In Lachlan Shire, the hunt is on for tourism ambassadors and a love of the local area is the primary prerequisite.
It’s an exciting time for locals with the new Visitor Information Centre, located within Condobolin’s “Utes in the Paddock” tourism precinct, soon to reach completion.
Utes in the Paddock, a concept brought to fruition by Jana and Graham Pickles of Burrawang West Station, has significantly increased visitation to the Central West region over the last eight years.
It was decided that this was the ideal site for the new tourism centre, a key component of a $10.1million fully-funded project to bolster tourism and transport in the Shire.
As the development moves to the next phase, Council is gearing up to launch a volunteer Tourism Ambassador Program.
Council’s Director Environment, Tourism, and Economic Development, Jon Shillito, said Council is looking for passionate locals who enjoy meeting and talking to people and have a few hours to spare, to join a new team of volunteer Tourism Ambassadors.
“As an Ambassador you will be willing to share your love of the shire with our visitors, be comfortable in meeting and greeting people, and be confident in answering phone calls and undertaking duties such as replenishing brochure racks, restocking merchandise, and assisting with event preparation," Mr Shillito said. "We will provide training and regular familiarisation tours."
The architecturally designed, air-conditioned, fully accessible centre will operate seven days a week and is expected to be open from late September this year.

When construction started last July, Mr Shillito said the aim of the new tourism precinct was to build on Lachlan’s strengths, which includes a reputation as a destination for an authentic bush experience in the heart of NSW; the natural environment and the area's rich country heritage.
“The Centre will attract visitors and tourists to the region, provide an area of recreation for locals, and offer an opportunity for locals and visitors to learn more about the history and culture of the Shire," he said.
If you are a keen local with some spare time Council’s Manager of Communication and Tourism, Robyn Ryan, would love to hear from you.
