Councils urge visitors to exercise cautionVisitors to the Western Plains need to take practical steps to stay safe on the region's roads during this wet season.

Walgett Shire Council has today called for visitors travelling the region by road to exercise caution and use common sense to keep safe.

With flooding across the State we encourage you to call in to local Visitor Information Centres along your trip for the latest Road Information," said Alana Douglas, Senior Visitor Information Centre Officer with Walgett Shire Council.

"Rural Councils have hundreds of kilometres of unsealed roads that cannot always be assessed quickly so always err on the side of caution and if it’s been raining assume it may be closed or contact the local council for confirmation before setting out."

Other tips to stay safe on our region's roads:

  • Check Live Traffic NSW & QLD Traffic and save them in your favourites,
  • avoid relying on your GPS
  • ensure your route is taking advantage of major sealed highways where possible
  • use road signs as a first option - most unsealed roads are closed in periods of wet weather.

"It is absolutely still safe to travel in our beautiful region," Ms Douglas said. "Just be aware of changing conditions and allow extra time for alternate routes if needed."

"The situation is changing quickly so please check in regularly, stay safe and enjoy your holidays!"
