Iconic travel route Darling River run is now fully open again across the full length from Brewarrina to Wentworth, after Central Darling Shire Council re-opened the flood-ravaged section between Tilpa and Wilcannia on Monday, April 24.

The development is good news for the region especially Walgett, Bourke and Brewarrina as more tourists are likely to be lured back to the thin, winding line of outback landscape, history, culture, literature and adventure.

The drive is over 700 kilometres and follows the Darling River from Walgett to Wentworth, with other western plains towns offering multiple access routes to join the run.

Some add another 300kms for side-trips to Broken Hill and Mungo National Park alhough the usual route starts Walgett through to Brewarrina to Bourke, Louth, Tilpa, Wilcanna, Menindee, Pooncarie and Wentworth.

Roads both sides of the river had blocked the route after the 128km western route (via West Tilpa Road) and 147km east route (via East Tilpa Road) were closed in late September following flooding caused by high Darling River flood levels.

In a statement, the Central Darling Shire Council says the stretch of road now being open would increase tourism for the region as many road trippers committed to the river run only when the full route was open and available.

“The increased tourist numbers exploring the outback and Darling River Run will benefit the towns and businesses along the Darling River,” a council spokesperson said.

“Being as accessible as possible for visitors is important for our communities and local businesses.”

Tourists are still being warned that road conditions along the run can change quickly due to weather.

"Most unsealed roads in the outback are closed after rain and can be severely damaged when driven on wet," warns touring website The Darling River Run.

"Motorists are advised to always travel according to the road conditions."
