These days 3.8 per cent of cars on the Australian roads are electric - good for the environment, yes, but how practical are they for regional NSW?
"Range Anxiety" is one reason that the market for electric vehicles in Australia has been slow. In the Western Plains, like many regional areas, EV charging stations are few and far between.
Transport NSW says the average distance travelled each day per person is 40 kilometres. But for some, that won't even get you into the closest town!
Like it or not, EV's are set to become a bigger part of the national vehicle numbers with governments honing in reducing emissions.
With EV charging stations already installed in a number of western plains towns, the stage is being set to enable an influx of electric vehicles - and not just for tourists.
An electric ute roadshow is coming to Narrabri next week for a free community event, determined to show that regional Australians shouldn’t have to pay high prices at the petrol pump and miss out on opportunities of electric vehicles while the cities speed ahead.
Featuring a range of electric utilities, it aims to highlight how electric vehicles can diversify into the much-loved country Aussie tradition and what the potential savings can be.
Local governments will be expected to play their part in achieving the State’s Net Zero targets of 50 per cent reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
Acting General Manager of Bourke Council, Ross Earl is also Executive Officer of the Far North West Joint Organisation of Councils (FNWJO) which encompasses Bourke, Walgett and Cobar Shires says adding additional EV charging stations in their Council regions are part of energy reducing initiatives on their agenda.
"We are shortly meeting with experts for advice on the best placement for EV charging stations," Mr Earl said
"At the moment there is some at Cobar and Bourke but if the uptake of electric cars goes the way its predicted to we will definitely need more to attract people to the region. As it was, over the Easter period, visitors were queueing up to recharge their vehicles."
With fuel prices soaring and regional Australians hit hardest, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more popular, and charging stations present new opportunities for investment in local communities.
Solar Citizens, a presenter at the Narrabri Road Show have commissioned a report showing the huge savings that a strong Fuel Efficiency Standard could bring to the North West NSW community by delivering more fuel-efficient cars to the region: $71 million over five years.
Transport NSW says EVs meet most people’s daily travel needs but the exact range of an EV will depend on a number of factors including the type of EV, the battery, the type of roads driven and your driving style.
Most EVs can easily drive 200km before needing to re-charge. Increased battery technology will also increase EVs’ driving range, with new models able to travel at least 400km on a single charge meaning that most people would only need to top up their battery every day or fully charge it once a week.
Another new locally installed EV charging station will be officially launched at the Narrabri event.
