Cruising around the Western Plains for electric vehicle drivers just got a whole lot more accessible, with the addition of new charging ports.

Funded by the EV Destination Charging grant program from the NSW government, new ports have been installed across 500 sites including Brewarrina, Condobolin, Coonabarabran, and Lightning Ridge.

“I welcome this funding and what it means for tourism in our region," MLC for Barwon Stephen Lawrence said.

“By expanding our EV charging network, we're not just improving convenience for residents and visitors; we're also powering our local economy. More EV drivers mean more business for our regions.

“We're also encouraging more people to adopt electric vehicles and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. This transition benefits our environment and our community so it's a win-win.”

Over 1,300 EV charging ports were rolled out statewide as part of the initiative to have fast-charging stations funded every 100 kilometres along all major regional routes in NSW.

Lightning Ridge's Wallangulla Motel, owned by the District Bowling Club, is one of the new EV port locations.

"Walgett Shire Council welcomes the continuation of the NSW Government's EV Destination Charging Grants," Manager of Economic Development Anthony Doyle at the Walgett Shire Council said.

"The grants have been a constant driver in expanding the EV charging network across regional and remote communities.

"With the motor industry rapidly transitioning towards electric powered vehicles, EV charging infrastructure is and will continue to be essential to sustaining and growing tourism across the Walgett Shire and other shires in remote NSW."

Mr Doyle said the increase of EV ports will help give regional towns more exposure and attract visitors to the area.

"EV charging is an exciting opportunity for regional communities to increase tourism activity and growth of local businesses," Mr Doyle said.

"Unlike conventional refuelling stops, EV drivers spend extended periods in a location while recharging, providing more time to explore the area, connect with locals and engage with businesses.

"This increased visitation time translates into greater economic benefits for local hospitality, retail, and tourism operators."

Lightning Ridge is one of the destinations on the newly released Pub Route which guides travellers along forgotten 'pub spots' to show them the beauty of what the outback in Western NSW has to offer.

Mr Doyle said the EV ports will give more range to travel along routes such as these and explore the outback.

Round three of the grant program is now open for applications from businesses, councils, and landowners in regional NSW.
