Freedoms for learner drivers, picnics for the double-vaccinated, and a CrimeStoppers phone that is ringing hot

Freedoms for learner drivers, picnics for the double-vaccinated, and a CrimeStoppers phone that is ringing hotLearner drivers will finally have the chance to get their driving hours up under new state allowances.

UP to 8pm last night, 16 new cases were recorded in the Western NSW Local Health District, with 12 identified in Dubbo and four in Bathurst, giving a glimmer of hope that western towns like Bourke, Walgett and Narromine can move towards the 14-day case-free period that will trigger a lift in restrictions.

Of these 16 cases, 15 are linked – five as household contacts and 13 are linked to a cluster or known cases – and one is under investigation.

While communities across the Western Plains region are enjoying a break from positive cases, sewerage detections in Lightning Ridge, Trangie and Nyngan have authorities concerned, with those communities urged to get tested for any minor symptom.

With more efficient turn-around times for testing, Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders says that even hay fever symptoms should prompt testing.

Influx of calls to police

Following the lifting of stay-at-home orders for many Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the region, locals are adamant about keeping their new-found freedoms, with hundreds of calls across the region made to CrimeStoppers and local police informing them of non-compliant activities in their neighbourhood.

Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree says that despite the backlog of calls, police are working to pursue every complaint.

“They’re dobbing people in because it not fair that someone can have a party or flout the rules when they shouldn’t,” said Mr Greentree.

A recent party held at a rural property in Parkes saw 11 infringement notices being issued, with the host being issued a court attendance notice. Attendees of the party had all travelled from the Orange region.

More opportunity to get out and about

Despite some shires not having their stay-at-home orders lifted today, authorities have assured that some freedoms apply to LGAs both in and out of lockdown.

From Monday, residents who have been double vaccinated can enjoy outdoor gatherings of up to five people (also double vaccinated) in a public setting.

Mr Saunders says the new allowance is an opportunity for members of the community to enjoy each other’s company.

“It’s a great chance for grandparents who are double vaccinated to catch up with their children and grandchildren,” Mr Saunders said.

Additionally, a decision released overnight will allow Learner drivers to leave their residence with one supervising driver to for learner driver practice.

The new exemption will allow L-plate holders the opportunity to gain more driving hours, requiring that only one other person (supervising driver) is allowed in the car, excluding children under 12.
