Gig State deal for more western townsMore towns in the west are to benefit from better internet.

There is light at the end of the tunnel for more Internet Users across the north and west of the state.

A landmark agreement with NBN and the NSW Liberal and Nationals Governments will allow ten towns to get fast and reliable fixed wireless internet connection in a Gig State deal worth $50 million dollars.

As some of these communities can only currently access satellite internet connections or the notoriously unreliable mobile tower network, this initiative is sure to be a relief for the areas selected.

Paul Toole, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, said the agreement with NBN Co will build a network of 56 new and co-located fixed wireless towers across 46 locations, boosting internet services for more than 11,000 homes and businesses.

“This is one of the largest ever digital infrastructure investments by the NSW Government,” Mr. Toole said.

“Our focus with Gig State is to improve services for communities who can currently only access a satellite internet connection, such as Wilcannia, Brewarrina, Condobolin, Tottenham, Merah North, Narrabri, Wee Waa, Baradine, Coonabarabran, and Binnaway.”

“Whether you’re running a household or a business, you need fast, reliable internet. This investment will ensure small communities in remote, coastal and rural areas have access to reliable, fast broadband internet and a choice of service providers, at comparative prices and speeds as metropolitan Sydney.

The NBN Co agreement was signed as part of the $60 million Gig State grants announced in 2022, with additional agreements expected in the coming months.

The Cobar Corridor - including Narromine, Trangie, Warren, Nyngan and Cobar - were already tagged for inclusion in the initiative in late 2022.

For many families and businesses suffering years of frustration, the promised improvements cannot come soon enough.

Tim and Lyndel Ellem are Tottenham farmers and the inconsistent internet service causes huge difficulties in health, education and running a business on the land.

"Being located near the centre of NSW our only internet option was satellite. Sounds impressive but it's fraught with reliability issues and it's not cheap," Mrs Ellem told the Western Plains App.

"After being unable to access face to face speech therapy for our five year old we found an online provider. Not ideal by any means but our only option."

'Weekly sessions through Zoom were extremely frustrating as we contended with considerable delays between the spoken word and the audible delivery," she said.

"Attempting to keep a 5 year old engaged with these delays was extremely difficult."

"Unfortunately, our satellite internet provider could not increase the speed of our Internet. Reliable and reasonably priced services will be very welcomed," said Mrs Ellem.

In the coming months NBN Co will commence detailed planning across the 46 regional locations and will provide these communities with more details as the project advances.

The network of 56 new and co-located NBN fixed wireless towers is planned to be rolled out incrementally and be completed by the end of 2025.

The $100 million Gig State project is part of the Regional Digital Connectivity program funded by the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund, dedicated to transformational infrastructure investment across regional NSW.
