Nyngan RSL Fishing Club is rod ready and trying to lure as many people to the Bogan River to fish this spring and summer as the weather starts to slowly warm up.
President of the Club Jake McClelland is very keen in the lead up to annual NSW Gone Fishing day on October 8th, to get locals out and so is Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW Tara Moriarty.
Applications are now open for fishing fun and activities as part of the annual Gone Fishing Day, which has keen anglers getting the tackle boxes fishing ready.
“Mark 8 October 2023 in your calendar as NSW Gone Fishing Day is on again! It doesn't matter if you haven't fished before or if you're the keenest of anglers, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone!” Minister Moriarty said.
“Clubs and organisations are encouraged to host their own event and can apply for a Gone Fishing Day package which includes rod and reel sets to assist with your event, some giveaways/prizes and advisory information.
“Grant funding of up to $2,000 is also available for clubs to help run their events.
“Recreational fishing clubs and organisations are encouraged to apply for a package or grant to host fishing activities such as casting and fishing workshops and information sessions on Gone Fishing Day.
“The grants can be used to purchase fishing gear, bait, food and soft drinks and equipment hire etc.
“Activities to restore fish habitat, through replanting and/or weeding creek banks, on Gone Fishing Day are also eligible to apply.
“Free community fishing events will also be hosted by DPI across NSW to celebrate our love of fishing and encourage everyone to get out on the water.”
Nyngan Fishing Club President Jake McClelland says it is a great way to encourage local clubs to hold community fishing days.
“The Gone Fishing Day packages are the perfect way for clubs to obtain funding to hold activities that will encourage people to get out to their local watering holes. We will certainly apply so we can share in the funding and promote the great sport of fishing in our area,” he said.
“We are lucky to have such a great river as the Bogan River and encourage all anglers of any levels of experience to come out and try their hand at fishing. Bring a mate, a chair and an esky and enjoy the peace of your local river.”
Minister Moriarty said Gone Fishing Day is a great way for the state’s one million fishers to connect and introduce their friends and family to their valued pastime.
“It doesn't matter if you haven't fished before or if you're the keenest of anglers, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone. I’ll see you there!” Minister Moriarty said.
DPI event locations will be announced over the coming months.
Application forms and grant funding guidelines are available at https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/resources/go-fishing-nsw and grant applications close 8 September 2023.
Gone Fishing Day is run in collaboration with the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation.
