Help Tottenham get their skates onA local skate park is on the wish list of the Tottenham community.

A little town with a big heart, residents of Tottenham in Lachlan Shire are looking to provide a new and exciting activity space for their young people.

"After discussions with parents and children in the community, we noticed how many people commented that they would love a skate park in town," Tanya Fulton, a member of the Tottenham Skate Park Development Group (TSPDG) said.

A small but keen committee of six, the group is a sub-committee of the Tottenham Welfare Council and are looking to provide some new and healthy options for locals and visitors.

"Tottenham is a small town and there really is no place for kids to ride bikes or skateboards," Ms Fulton said. "In summer we have the pool but that's about it. We don't want kids riding around on the roads so the idea of a skate park came about. At the moment the closest park is about an hour away."

While in its early stages, the committee is eager to see plans progress.

"We're not even sure where it will be located at this stage," Ms Fulton said. "We have created an on-line survey and put it out into the community so we can plan further.

"Road maintenance is always an issue in this area and while its certainly important for money to be directed to this, we see the Skate Park as a great future plan and will keep an eye out for grants."

Possible locations discussed have included the middle of town, close to the park and toilets, near the sports club or near the swimming pool.

Fellow committee member, Sally Fitzalan, currently on parental leave from her role at Tottenham Central School said local children get to see amazing skate parks when away from town and the TSPDG are eager to provide a similar facility locally.

"I'm really passionate about Tottenham," Ms Fitzalan said. "Since we got serious about the skate park concept, we have received great support from locals of all ages. It's also worth noting that on our small committee, we have one high school student and that representation of young people is very important.

Ms Fitzalan said she attended the Lachlan Shire's recent "Meet the Councillors" event and flagged plans to council.

"They were very excited and enthusiastic about our plans," Ms Fitzalan said. "The committee will be doing up a presentation to take to Council in a couple of months."

In the meantime, the committee is eager for feedback to guide their plans and would love people to respond by May 30th. Paper copies of the survey are in the May edition of the Talking Tottenham newsletter.
