Bargain hunters and those wanting to make a bit of cash from surplus items will be excited to hear that Narromine Shire Council has announced its participation in this year's Garage Sale Trail.
The Garage Sale Trail is Australia's biggest secondhand treasure hunt with over three million pre-loved items going up for sale over two big weekends.
Last year, this Australia-wide initiative saw over 400,000 Australians shop or sell at more than 14,000 garage sales across the nation.
Together, they extended the life of over 4.8 million kilograms of 'stuff', saving these items from landfill and maximising the value of all the energy and resources that goes in to making the things we buy.
Narromine Shire Council is encouraging residents to get involved in this popular sustainability initiative, which provides the perfect opportunity for locals to cash in, find a bargain and contribute to reducing waste.
Narromine Shire Council’s Manager of Waste and Community Facilities, Anthony Everett, emphasised the benefits of the initiative.
"Participating in a garage sale is a simple yet effective way for residents to reduce their carbon footprint," he said.
"The Garage Sale Trail not only offers a fun, social activity but also encourages sustainability by keeping valuable items out of landfill. It's a win-win for the community and the environment."
The Garage Sale Trail takes place over two weekends, 9-10 November and 16-17 November. Registration is free and open to all residents, schools and community groups.
Participants who register will receive helpful resources, including tips, tools, and free promotional materials to make organizing their sale easier.
This event complements Narromine Shire Council’s ongoing waste reduction efforts, including the Return and Earn vending machine, green waste services, and the Community Recycling Cabinet at the Customer Service and Payments Centre, which collects batteries, mobile phones, printer cartridges, and smoke detectors.
"Supporting the Garage Sale Trail aligns with Council’s dedication to sustainability," added Mr Everett.
"We encourage everyone to get involved, declutter their homes, and give items a second life, all while helping reduce landfill."
So, if you live in Narromine Shire – or live elsewhere but are keen to check out the garage sales – mark your calendars and/or register to host a garage sale during the event.
