Taking NAIDOC to the streets in BreBrewarrina took to the streets for an early start to NAIDOC Week

The Brewarrina Central school had an eventful NAIDOC Week during the final week of Term 2.

The celebrations took to the street on Monday 26 June with the all-important NAIDOC March down Bourke Street and then back down the main street to the school.

Students and staff from St Patrick's School, Brewarrina Christian School, and the little ones from the Child and Family Centre also took part.

Ahead of the march a welcome to country was performed by Liam Trapman, a Year 10 student at the Brewarrina Central School, and the flag raising was done by three local men, Cecil Smith, Neil Barker and Thomas Biles.

Tuesday night was a photography exhibition which was thought up and put together by Kimmy Hardy the Connected Communities Engagement Officer at Brewarrina Central School.

This year’s theme for NAIDOC is ‘For Our Elders’, so the school children were encouraged to put in pictures of their elders in their families.

The night had a great turn out and was a huge success.

One community member who was very pleased with the exhibition was Helen Ferguson.

“(It was an) absolutely brilliant and overwhelming feeling seeing the faces of our family’s life journeys. Thank you for our wonderful time together reminiscing of our days together. Great job, great times making great memories.”

On Thursday the Staff and students welcomed the community into the school for a big breakfast of bacon & eggs muffins, croissants, and a pancake station. The school was buzzing with activity and happy faces.

Next week will be the official NAIDOC week and many organisations are working together to host a community event tomorrow, Monday 3 July.
