It's a knockout at Walgett this weekend Even the kids will be amongst the knock-out rugby competition at Walgett this weekend.

Rugby League Knockout is alive and well at Ricky Walford Oval at Walgett this Saturday 16 September.

Spokesperson for the event, Rikka Lamb, said the Walgett Rugby League Knockout was established in 2009 to provide a local area Rugby League knockout and so lovers of the game don’t need to miss out on the excitement of a carnival due to travel restrictions and limited access.

Ms Lamb said it was fantastic that small communities including Walgett, Mungindi, Toomelah, Moree, Bourke, Brewarrina, Goodooga, Collarenebri, Coonabarabran, Lightning Ridge, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Wee Waa, Enngonia and Coonamble can be involved in the event.

This year the Walgett Knockout has a top prize of $10,000 for the winning men's team.

"It has been a success since the commencement of the event," Ms Lamb said. "The event has more than 2,500 people in attendance and 800+ Rugby league players the opportunity to participate in the game - from Junior players through to Women's and Men's."

The draw for the competition was held live on Facebook on Tuesday this week. There will be 16 teams in the men's competition, four teams in the women's competition and a range of junior teams from Under 8's to Under 12's.

"The Walgett Knockout brings our communities together to celebrate excellence on the field, encourage healthy lifestyles and create positive social emotional wellbeing," Ms Lamb said.

Walgett Shire Council is encouraging people to come and see the teams have a hit out, saying on social media that those attending are guaranteed a great day of country footy.

The event is a fully catered and no alcohol event.
