Cases in the Western Local Health District (LHD) more than doubled in the past 24 hours, after most local testing clinics re-opened following the Christmas shutdown.
There were 244 new cases identified in the 24 hours to 8pm on Thursday 30 December and, while the vast majority were in the regional population centres (Dubbo/Wellington 100, Orange/Cabonne 54, Bathurst 24, Mid Western shire 17) the numbers also continue to creep up in smaller western plains towns.
Warrumbungle Shire saw a further 11 cases (including 6 in Coonabarabran), Cobar recorded 6, Coonamble and Narromine 3, and Brewarrina, Lachlan and Warren shires 2 each.
Five people are now in hospital across the Western LHD with one person in intensive care.
Along with changes to the national definition of 'close contacts' and new priorities for PCR testing at official test sites, regional residents are now grappling with changes to isolation requirements and calling for more access to Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs).
A lag in supply of RATs to pharmacies and supermarkets in western plains towns can be expected to continue over the next few weeks.
Authorities are urging local residents to exercise caution and concentrate on celebrating safely tonight.
"Don't go out if you have any symptoms," a health spokesperson said.
"Celebrate with a few close friends and gather outside if you can, or with the windows open if you're indoors."
"Check-in at all venues, wear a mask and practice physical distancing," they said.
"If you can, take a rapid antigen test before you go out."
