The term ‘national treasure’ is not a moniker given often these days.
But for the cartoonist, Michael Leunig, it was spot on.
The rabble rouser was unique and gentle in his approach, his simplistic cartoons often mightier than the sword in their satirical and whimsical view of politics and modern culture.
His passing last week, aged 79, will leave space in the Australian political commentary landscape that will be impossible to fill.
