Country authors are telling their stories in 2025, producing easy to read and understand books with bright and colourful illustrations.

Prolific awarding winning Australian writer and author Mem Fox known for ‘Possum Magic’ and illustrated book ‘Where is the Green Sheep ?’’ has sold more than 10 million copies - proof that the latest technology like e-book readers and ipads are not yet outpacing the old-fashioned hard cover book.

Enter former Nyngan dance teacher and three-time community person of the year in Bogan shire, Angie White.

She has just released a children’s book ‘Amelia Minnie and the Secret Fairies'.

The mother of three and now grandmother says her growth as a young woman in a loving family inspired her to pen her first book.

‘’My Mum and her mum are very imaginative people and growing up they read to myself and my three brothers with actions, voices, dance, and song.

"It inspired me to want to create something that kids could read that would hold a little magic.’’

The book has already caught the eyes of respected authors and mums alike.

Chezzy Denyer wife of Channel 10’s Deal or No Deal has praised Mrs White’s book.

‘’This gorgeous children’s book has transported me back to my own childhood in the days I was obsessed with fairies," she said.

"The story shimmers with wonders but its illustrations truly bring the magic world to life, each page a stepping stone to an enchanted forest."

Mrs White says Amelia Minnie wasn't originally intended for a wide audience.

"I wrote my first Amelia Minnie book one Sunday afternoon just as a fun gift to give my nieces and nephews," she said.

"When they read them, they said you should make a book out of it.

"My own three children agreed so I thought why not?

"Little did I know the process involved and just how much work goes into producing a book.’’

The book is illustrated by Italian Isabella Misso Branca who works out of the Giovanelli Castle, home of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Milan.

The major book publishers, knowing the market still likes children’s stories, were impressed.

"I was so lucky Starfishbay Publishing offered to do two books and away we went.

"Holding the actual completed book in my hands was surreal particularly as I decided to use my maiden name as a nod to my parents who gave me the skills I needed.

"It was so lovely seeing their pride in my achievement.

"My family and friends and community have been so supportive I feel very lucky indeed.’’

‘Amelia Minnie and the Secret Fairies’ is now in Sydney’s biggest bookshop Dymocks and across the Western Plains, with the second book due out in early 2026.
