Major flood warning for Castlereagh River at Coonamble The Castlereagh River is rising again and major flooding is expected at Coonamble later today.

UPDATED: Gilgandra Shire Council has advises that the Curban Community Bridge is closed, as well as all unsealed roads in the Gilgandra Shire. Please proceed with caution on all other roads as water may be present.


The Castlereagh River in Gilgandra is currently at 5.5m and expected to peak mid-afternoon today at 6.7m. It is not expected that any businesses nor houses will need to be evacuated at this level.

 

Property owners adjoining the Castlereagh should consider moving low-lying stock and machinery to higher ground.


The Bureau of Meteorology has this morning issued updated flood warnings for the Castlereagh River. 


With an upstream peak of 10.40 metres expected at Lucas Bridge near Breelong between Gilgandra and Mendooran this morning, higher than expected flood levels are due to arrive in Gilgandra and Coonamble today.


Major flooding is likely at Coonamble from Sunday morning, similar to the 2010 flood event. By this evening  (Saturday 27 November) the Castlereagh River at Coonamble is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (4.90 m) Saturday evening.  


The river level may reach around 5.20 metres on Sunday morning, with major flooding. 


The Quambone and Pilliga Roads are cut by floodwater and remain closed to all traffic. 


Moderate flooding is expected at Gilgandra this morning and is expected to reach 6.7 metres later in the morning. 


Moderate flooding continues at Mendooran where the Castlereagh peaked at 8.6 metres at around 7pm on Friday evening. 

The river at Mendooran at 7am this morning was at 5.89 metres and falling.
