Man taken to hospital after hitting pig on Castlereagh HighwayThe damage left by the collision with a pig on the Castlereagh Highway in Walgett on Friday.

The explosion of feral pigs in western NSW is taking a toll - and not just in damaged crops, livestock losses and destroyed fencing.

A man was sent to Walgett hospital with minor injuries after his vehicle collided with a pig on the Castlereagh Highway on 24 April.

Emergency services were alerted at around 4:30am on Friday after the 19-year-old sole occupant hit the animal at around 60 kilometres north of Coonamble.

They said the Toyota Land Cruiser left the road and rolled, although the vehicle was found upright on its wheels when they arrived.

The male driver was able to get out of the car, which had Queensland number plates, and call for help.

He suffered a possible elbow fracture as well as minor cuts and abrasions.

The scene was attended by police, ambulance and NSW Fire and Rescue services.

The pig died at the scene while the roof of the Toyota partially caved in on the front passenger side.

Police said they are still investigating.
