An acclaimed mathematician, writer and media personality will be guest of honour as Gilgandra celebrates Australia Day this weekend.

Gilgandra Shire Council has appointed Dr Clio Cresswell as its Australia Day ambassador for the year, and say they are looking forward to coming together as a community to reflect, respect and celebrate.

Dr Clio is a faculty member of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney, her research interests focus on the evolution of mathematical thought and the role of mathematics in society. The fascination is how this abstract

thinking surrounds us from Engineering to Medicine to Artificial Intelligence.

And she’s built quite a global profile for her work, with two TEDx presentations, one in Sydney at the Sydney Opera House, and one in Budapest.

The Shire will kick off proceedings with a concert this evening at the Gilgandra RSL, followed by community celebrations at Hunter Park tomorrow.
