Jenny Aitchison MP, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, recently completed a self-described "North-West Odyssey" visiting Western Plains locations including Lightning Ridge, Warren, Bourke, Collarenebri, Cobar and Brewarrina.
"Travelling from Bourke to Cobar, I met with the General Manager Peter Vlatko, Deputy Mayor Michael Prince, and the team from Cobar Shire Council and the office of the Member for Barwon Roy Butler MP," Ms Aitchison said during her journey.
In Warren, the Shire reported it was pleased to host Ms Aitchison and Mayor of Warren Shire, Milton Quigley, and General Manager, Gary Woodman had the opportunity to discuss several important items with the Minister.
Important points on the agenda included school bus services, current and future road funding including flood restoration, Warren town levee emergency operations works funding, rest area upgrades for the Oxley and Mitchell Highway and the upgrade of Nevertire-Bogan Road intersection.
Mr Quigley said it was good to see the Minister in regional NSW and to be able to update her on local issues.
"We appreciate that Minister Aitchison was able to see first hand what issues are important to Warren Shire," he said. "Most issues were transport and road related which relate to her governmental role."
According to Mr Quigley, another important local road issue is the Oxley Highway roundabout in the centre of Warren.
"Council have earmarked $90,000 to help with the upgrade of this state government road," Mr Quigley said. "However, it will take the best part of $450,000 to get this up to scratch for use by road trains."
Also on the list of requests was the Gunningbar Creek rail bridge replacement and rail line maintenance.
"This rail bridge was burned out a few years ago and desperately needs replacement so trains can extend past the airport," Mr Quigley said.
All up, Warren Shire said the visit allowed the Minister to better understand Warren Shire’s community priorities and enabled advocacy for action on these priorities.
Further west, Minister Aitchison got a first-hand taste of how regional roads can upset even the best laid plans.
Minister Aitchison also visited Enngonia Hotel with Mayor Barry Hillman and GM Leonie Brown from Bourke Shire Council.
Ms Aitchison's visit beyond the Bourke region was cut short due to bad weather.
"Thanks to Mayor Barry Hillman and GM Leonie Brown from Bourke Shire Council who took me out to the Oasis Hotel at Enngonia to talk to some locals," Ms Aitchison said. "It was so great to chat with the locals about their roads and transport issues.
"Unfortunately a massive downpour on Sunday afternoon put paid to travel out to Corner Country and Tibbooburra so we stayed another night in Bourke."
