A light magnitude 2.7 earthquake hit 23Â kilometres east of Gilgandra in the early hours of Thursday 24 April 2025.

The earthquake was recorded by seismic instruments based in Dubbo, Cobar, Lightning Ridge and Tamworth.
It came just shy of 24 hours after the 4.6 magnitude quake that shook people awake around Warkworth, near Singleton in the Hunter Valley at around 3am on 23 April.

The Warkworth quake was one of a eleven recorded with a magnitude of 3 or higher in the Hunter region in the past 12 months.

The Gilgandra quake was reported felt by some people near the epicenter, in a heavily timbered area north of the Castlereagh Highway towards Mendooran, close to the Boyben State Forest.

 The depth of the quake could not be determined, but is assumed to be shallow.
