The identity of a man hospitalised with burn injuries following a house fire on Ross Street on Wednesday 20 March is yet to be revealed.

NSW Fire & Rescue received a callout to the weatherboard house about 6:30pm.

Another Ross Street resident Ian Rindfleish told The Coonamble Times he had been driving along the street when he saw smoke billowing from the house.

When he saw a man come out of that house, he went to assist and asked if anyone else was inside before driving him to the hospital.

The man was later airlifted from Coonamble to Sydney and remains in Royal North Shore Hospital.

Ian's partner Samantha Warnock called emergency services.

"I rang triple-O immediately and started running towards the house and I've seen my husband take off quite quickly," Samantha said.

"I got about a metre away, went to the front of the house and beside the house calling, 'is anyone in there, respond if you're in there.' I wasn't getting any response.

"I told my younger son, my nine-year-old, to block the street off. There were cone hats down further so he put those across the street.

"As I was calling out to ask if anyone else was in the house, the loungeroom started getting engulfed in flames and as I turned my back to walk back out of the premises, the power line that was connected to the house snapped and fell back towards the pole."

Fire & Rescue responded quickly with three trucks and eight crew members attending the fire.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by about 8pm.

Police and NSW Fire & Rescue did not report any other people injured or known to be in the house during the fire.

Property rental agency Beyond 21 told the Coonamble Times that they understood that the property was not tenanted at the time, so should have been vacant.

It is not clear why the man was in the house at the time of the fire.

Police said they are treating the fire as suspicious.

Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District have commenced an investigation into the fire.

A crime scene was established and has been examined by specialist officers.
