Last December, with great sadness, Lachlan Shire Council Mayor John Medcalf OAM advised of the sudden and unexpected passing of Councilor Elaine Bendall.
Councilor Bendall was first elected to Council as a D Ward representative in February 2019 and was re-elected to office in December 2021.
Her death has meant the need for a by-election, held on 20 May. The results of which were announced on Tuesday 6 June.
Robyn Turner has been elected as the new D Ward Councillor and will attend her first official Council Meeting on 28 June 2023.
“Elaine was a strong and passionate advocate for Tullibigeal and D Ward however, she always based her decision-making on what was best for Lachlan Shire. Her understanding of local government and its processes grew during her three-year stint as Councilor and she undertook her civic duties with positivity, dedication, and much pride," Mr Medcalf said.
"Renowned for her accessibility, Cr Bendall could often be found discussing issues in depth with local residents and confidently supporting their interests on council matters. She was not only a Councilor, she was a also devoted family person."
Ms Turner was the only candidate to reside in D Ward and has lived in the area for many years.
"I've lived on our farm, half way between Tulli and Lake all my adult life," Ms Turner said. "Our kids went to school at Lake and Tulli Central Schools and played footy with the town teams."
Ms Turner has worked in the area and also volunteered with CWA, Lower Lachlan CS, Blue Waters, the local show art section and several school bodies. She is also a Justice of the Peace.
She was elected with 343 or 57.74% of first preference votes.
"My focus on running for council is to assist D Ward residents and being a voice for their concerns and needs," Ms Turner said. "And also aspiring for equity and enhancement for all Lachlan Shire residents"
Ms Turner said the "classic council 3R's" (rates, roads and rubbish) are still very relevant, especially considering new Valuer General valuation figures.
"I am passionate in promoting this region," Ms Turner said.
Ms Turner thanked all the people in the region for their well wishes, plus offers of help and support with her councillor application.
"It's why I love living in a rural community. Everyone may know about our histories (warts and all!). But more importantly, they are also 120 per cent supportive and so caring as well," she said.
