Narromine is looking at a future as an epicentre for industrial activity, with the development of an industrial precinct along the impending Inland Rail about to move towards the planning phases.
The site will be built with 40 hectares to accommodate interested businesses, with plans to expand to up to 100 hectares in its second phase.
Narromine Shire Council Mayor Craig Davies said that despite it only just being in the planning phase, there is plenty of interest for the space six kilometres out of Narromine.
“It’s designed for products that need to be freighted and that need manufacturing out of town…we have no doubt that other organisations and companies are going to want to be a part of it,” he said.
“We expect there’ll be a lot of interest from Dubbo, but I believe that we will also see companies in Sydney wanting to relocate,” Cr Davies said.
The town has already been chosen as the home of the Inland Rail Material Distribution Centre, which will be located within the precinct.
Currently being built, the distribution centre will hold thousands of tonnes of materials for the construction of the Inland Rail.
“Once Inland Rail has no further use for that site, council will be able to purchase it and use it to load trains that will have direct access to both Inland Rail lines to the Hunter network and also to the country rail link,” Cr Davies said.
According to reports from Ernst and Young, the Narromine industrial precinct will have the capacity to generate 700 jobs.
“And we have another area within this precinct that we believe has the potential to add another 350 to 400 jobs,” Cr Davies said.
“It will be a massive boost to the local economy, and gives us the diversity of industry that means we don’t have to rely on agriculture 100 per cent of the time.”
As part of the project, the Narromine Shire Council is looking to purchase a total of 500 hectares around the site.
“There are companies looking at taking much of that available land as we speak,” Cr Davies said.
The precinct is set to be developed in stages and planned for the area bounded by Narwonah Siding Road and Craigie Lea Lane, six kilometres from Narromine.
An extensive planning process will now commence, and formal public comment will be sought as the planning progresses.
