The NSW State Emergency Service’s (SES) Warren Unit has been boosted with the addition of a new light storm trailer to enhance its existing storm response capability.
Unit Commander Samantha Midgley said the Warren SES has responded to 180 requests for assistance over the past year and over 100 of those were in the last month. With the continuation of unstable weather patterns, the new equipment arrived just at the right time.
"This new trailer carries operational response equipment used for tree and roof jobs. It’s a welcome asset to our members who are passionate and work hard to support our community, operating alongside emergency services partners," said Inspector Midgley.
"With an increase of damaging weather over the past few months, our members have had an increase in requests for assistance across a large area."
In the current flood event, other than a small number of water rescues, Warren SES has been kept busy responding to sand-bagging requests and re-supply jobs for people and properties that are isolated.
"We had the use of a high clearance vehicle for three weeks which helped in the peak of the flood," said Inspector Midgley. "Even though its calmed down a bit now we're still preparing for re-supplies as there are quite a few properties that remain isolated."
As the flood situation continues Warren Unit personnel are being supported by out of area teams from Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Burwood, with an interagency co-operation with Surf Lifesaving NSW for jobs via boat.
Minister for Western NSW Dugald Saunders said volunteers from across Western NSW have been tireless in their ongoing response.
“The new light storm trailer is a great asset that will contribute to the SES’ mission of saving lives and making the community in Warren and surrounding areas safer,” said Mr Saunders.
As of Monday 7 November the Macquarie River at Warren town gauge is at the major flood level of 9.52 metres and steady.
