THE TOWNSHIP of Walgett was thrilled to officially welcome more than two dozen new residents to the local community last week.

The town's annual Welcome to Walgett evening was held on Wednesday 2 March at the local CWA club rooms, hosted in partnership between the CWA and Walgett Shire Council.

Council's Senior Visitor Information Centre Officer Alana Douglas said the event was attended by around 50 people, with more than half being new residents to the town.

"We were so thrilled, it was probably our biggest attendance yet with over 26 new residents which is more than double what we had last year," Mrs Douglas said.

"There was a really broad range of new people, from some fresh young teachers - including Alex who will be teaching music at the high school this year - to some new health workers working at the local AMS.

"It was quite a mixture of younger and older people too, which was so nice to see."

According to Mrs Douglas, the event was run very casually with a few tables set up for people to eat finger food prepared by the CWA ladies while the new people mingled and introduced themselves to each other and the locals.

"It was great to see them taking the initiative - I think the biggest thing they put across was the positivity and excitement about being here and how much they were looking forward to being a part of the community," she said.

Representatives from a range of community organisations were also in attendance to provide information to the new residents about the various services and social opportunities available in the town.

"These included Walgett Show Society, Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service, Sing Australia, Walgett RSL, Cumborah Pistol Club, Walgett Community College, Fire and Rescue & ICPA NSW," Mrs Douglas said.

"The benefit of these groups attending was demonstrated (the other) night with Sing Australia securing two new members to harmonise with.

"I think they're really keen to get involved which makes a huge difference in our local town."

New people to the Walgett shire who weren't able to make it on the night and are still keen to get to know their new community will have other opportunities in Collarenebri and Lightning Ridge later this month.
