 Nyngan Town Hall Closed

Nyngan Town Hall has recently closed for Structural Inspection following water damage from a leak in the roof.

Bogan Shire Council is engaging a structural engineer to carry out a comprehensive inspection of the Hall for advice on a repair process.

The Historic hall built in 1897 is an integral part of the history of Nyngan, and local residents are worried for its future, particularly after the demise of the towns 420-tiered seat venue the New Palais Theatre for similar issues several years ago.

Whilst the Heritage listed hall awaits inspection to ascertain the full damage, two offices and any activities taking place in the hall have been moved to other premises.

The leak in the roof caused visible damage to parts of the ceiling in the office space but due to the size and age of the building it may have compromised other areas.

The building has been a very well utilised space for the community over the years with all sorts of events taking place from playgroups, exercise and dance classes, Balls, luncheons, meetings and Concerts and visitors can be seen standing out the front of the building admiring and taking photos of its beautiful façade.

The building once held the local council chambers but over the years has pivoted to a loved asset for the community, with its stage, supper room and office buildings.

“Cracks in some of the interior walls have become worse and, until we get an engineer’s report that says its safe, we are unfortunately forced to restrict access to the building,” says Bogan Shire General Manager Derek Francis.

“We have also asked for a remediation plan which will help us cost what works need to be done so that we can apply for grant funding to fix the Town Hall, which is an important asset and part of the Shire’s heritage.”
