The NSW National Party have elected Minister of Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole as new party leader and Deputy Premier in a secret party room ballot this morning (Wednesday 6 October).
Mr Toole is the former deputy of outgoing Deputy Premier John Barilaro who announced his retirement from politics on Monday 4 October and officially resigned this morning.
Mr Toole went up against Minister for Water Melinda Pavey in the party room vote and won with 15 votes to three.
NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women Bronnie Taylor was elected as Mr Toole's deputy leader.
Mr Toole has been a member of the Nationals for about a decade, entering Parliament in 2011, after working as a primary school teacher for almost 20 years.
During this time, he was also a councillor on Bathurst Regional Council, becoming Mayor in 2007.
Leaving the party room this morning, Mr Toole told reporters he was "really pleased" to have been elected leader of the party and he was looking forward to getting back to work.
As new leader of the Nationals, Mr Toole will also take on the role of Deputy Premier under new NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, who was elected NSW Liberals leader on Tuesday morning.
Mr Toole said he would have more to say in the very near future.
