NSW Treasurer and Member for Epping Domenic Perrottet has been elected the 46th Premier of NSW after a landslide ballot victory at a NSW Liberal party room meeting this morning.
Mr Perrottet has been Deputy Leader of the NSW Liberals since January 2017 and was reportedly the favourite in anticipation of the election, up against state Planning Minister Rob Stokes. Perrottet secured victory with 39 votes to five. State Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres was elected as Mr Perrottet's deputy leader.
He replaces outgoing Premier Gladys Berejiklian who announced her resignation on Friday 1 October after the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said it was investigating whether she had engaged in or encouraged corrupt conduct while in a secret relationship with former state MP Darryl Maguire.
All members of the NSW Liberal Party expressed their shock and sadness following the announcement on Friday, a sentiment that was reportedly still prevalent in the party room this morning.
Both Mr Perrottet and Mr Stokes addressed reporters after leaving the party room following the election this morning.
“It’s been an honour and an absolute privilege to be elected as the parliamentary leader of the Liberal Party - I really appreciate the trust that my colleagues are putting in me,” Mr Perrottet said
“I always said that I would give people a choice – they have chosen emphatically,” Mr Stokes said.
“Democracy is the winner today. Dom Perrottet will be a magnificent Premier and he has my undivided loyalty and support. I will use every ounce of strength in my body to make sure he is re-elected as Premier of NSW when we go to the polls in 2023.”
When asked if he would like to remain on the new cabinet, Mr Stokes said it would be entirely up to Mr Perrottet.
