A NORTH-WEST NSW renewable energy organisation has launched a petition calling on Member for Parkes Mark Coulton to consider supporting an independent MP's initiative designed to help regional communities have a direct role in going green.
The Local Power Plan (LPP) is an initiative of Independent Member for Indi Dr Helen Haines that will come before the federal parliament later this year.
The LPP includes three schemes delivered by a new independent statutory body, the Australian Local Power Agency which will allow communities to create their own renewable energy projects and be involved in driving or co-investing in pre-existing projects.
One of the major proponents for the LPP is Narrabri-based not-for-profit renewable energy company Geni.Energy which was set up just over 12 months ago.
A director for Geni.Energy Sally Hunter said regional towns in north-western parts of the state, including Coonamble are finding it more difficult than ever to be directly involved in Renewable Energy Projects.
“Here in Parkes we have seen far too many of the benefits created by major projects being sent out of the region," Mrs Hunter said.
"Ownership by multi-national companies with head offices in other cities and international shareholders means that money all leaves our community.
"So for those of us that aren't in that lucky bucket, the LPP is about the localised benefits created through self-sustaining energy projects that will also encourage businesses to move out here."
Mrs Hunter said an initiative like the LPP would guarantee that regional communities would not miss out on renewable energy projects and even have a personal stake in them because of their remote locations.
“Northwest NSW has fantastic renewable energy resources, but we run the risk that the majority of our communities will miss out on the opportunities arising from this industry," she said.
“Local manufacturing and value-adding, recycling and even new industries based on cheaper renewable energy is all possible right here."
Despite this, Mrs Hunter acknowledged as an independent MP's initiative, the LPP might be difficult to put through parliament.
She said she is calling on Member for Parkes Mark Coulton to "put politics and ideology to the side" and support it.
"In the past we have had a letter of support from Mark Coulton for a project we were seeking funding for, so we believe he believes in our cause," she said.
"We also understand he is pro-regional development and renewables is something that will do that - it will just be whether or not this can translate to supporting a bill that is put forward by an Independent."
Geni.Energy have since launched a petition calling on Mr Coulton to support Dr Haines' initiative.
She said it had been a slow start, but was slowly gaining traction over social media.
Mr Coulton said he was aware of the petition and the federal government was considering the LPP and would continue to work through Dr Haines' proposal.
"It is about getting the balance right with a mix of generation types, storage projects and transmission, and the federal government is taking action to address this," Mr Coulton said.
"The federal government is accelerating all priority transmission projects, creating thousands of new jobs, putting downward pressure on prices and shoring up the grid's reliability."
